Position Overview
The Summer Programs Assistant helps run two of EWDC's signature summer programs: the E. Warren Farmers Market and Food Truck Fridays. Both programs bring foot traffic to the corridor, support local vendors, and give neighbors a reason to gather. This is a hands-on, public-facing role for someone who likes community work, stays organized, and wants to be part of what's happening on East Warren this summer.
What You'll Do
- Event setup and breakdown
- Arrive early to help set up tents, tables, signage, and vendor spaces
- Help break down the site and leave it clean at the end of each event
- Keep equipment organized and accounted for
Vendor support
- Greet and check in vendors when they arrive
- Direct vendors to their spaces and help with load-in
- Be a friendly point of contact during the event and flag any issues to the Director of Programs
Community engagement
- Welcome attendees and answer questions about the events and the corridor
- Staff the EWDC info table and share materials about programs and upcoming activities
- Talk with neighbors and gather informal feedback about what's working and what isn't
- Represent EWDC with warmth, professionalism, and respect for everyone who shows up
Operations and logistics
- Help set up programming elements like music, kids' activities, or partner activations
- Keep an eye on event flow and help solve small problems as they come up
- Track attendance and basic event data
- Take photos during events to support social media and reporting
Reporting and communication
- Submit short post-event notes covering attendance, vendor feedback, and anything that needs follow-up
- Attend pre-season orientation and any required training
- Stay in regular communication with the Director of Programs before, during, and after events
What We're Looking For
Required
- At least 18 years old or Older
- High School Diploma preferred
- Reliable transportation to the East Warren corridor
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds and stay on your feet for long stretches
- Strong communication and people skills
- Dependable, on time, and able to follow through
- Comfortable engaging with a diverse public
Preferred
- A connection to E Warren or the surrounding Detroit neighborhoods
- Past experience in customer service, retail, events, or community programs
- Interest in community development, food systems, small business, or nonprofit work
- Basic social media or photography skills
Schedule
- Farmers Market & Food Truck Friday: Thursdays & Fridays (2-8:30PM), including setup and breakdown
- Occasional additional hours for special events, training, or planning meetings
- Additional assigned duties
